Maximizing Google Maps: The Ultimate Travel Tool
Most of us probably use Google, right? And something even more specific: Google Maps. What many people don't realize is that this app isn't just great for navigation; you can also use it for other purposes.
On Google Maps, you can create different lists for your travels. Within these lists, you can drop pins. Personally, I have one big list where I put everything, but if you prefer a more organized approach, you can create separate lists for different countries or trips.
Before and during your journey, you often receive many tips from fellow travelers. I've seen various ways people store these tips: in a large note, in a WhatsApp conversation, or even just in a notebook. Personally, I've always stored them in my Google Maps, which surprises many people. But let me tell you, this is the most convenient method!
Here's how it works: you receive tips from people, you type the location into your Google Maps, and "pin" that spot. You can do this in different ways: with a green pin, a yellow star, or a pink heart.
Green pin:
I use the green pin for activities, attractions, must-see spots, nature reserves, cities, neighborhoods, streets—basically anything. This way, once I'm at the location, I can see everything on the map and plan my visit accordingly. It helps me see what's close together and what's not. Then, I can create a small itinerary for myself, deciding what to do first and what comes next.
Yellow star:
The yellow star is for restaurants. I mark restaurants I've visited and enjoyed with a star, as well as those recommended by others.
Pink heart:
I reserve the pink heart for accommodations. While traveling, you also receive hostel recommendations—where to stay and where not to. I give a heart to hostels that people recommend. Once I'm at the location and have booked a hostel, I remove the other hearts to avoid confusion. I like being able to see my accommodation right on the map so I can easily inform the taxi driver or find my way there.
I hope you find these tips helpful!
