Renting a scooter in Vang Vieng, Laos
My friend and I wanted to explore the area in Vang Vieng, Laos. And how do you do that?... Yes, you rent a scooter for the day! By now, both of us had been in Asia for a few months, but neither of us had ridden a scooter here yet. With a bit of excitement, we hopped on the scooter. I drove, and my friend sat on the back. The first few minutes required careful attention. The traffic was different, the roads were rough, and of course, getting used to the scooter was necessary.
We had been riding for about an hour when I couldn't accelerate anymore. The scooter slowly came to a halt. That's when it dawned on me; of course, you need to refuel before you start riding. But in our excitement, we had forgotten about that… 😅
With temperatures at 30 degrees Celsius, we pushed the scooter a few kilometers to the nearest gas station. When we arrived there... it was closed.
Some locals had noticed us and offered to help. They provided us with their gasoline so that we could ride to the next gas station. It's funny how from a young age, we're taught not to trust strangers and to be cautious, especially on the other side of the world. While there is certainly some truth to that, the vast majority of people I've met have always been willing to help and had my best interests at heart.
Of course, it's important to trust your instincts in situations, but I've come to realize that most people genuinely want the best for you and want to help you out.
